L e telefilm traces the life of Isherwood in Berlin. How this young English teacher, future writer, who fled England for inspiration and live freely as a homosexual ("I Went Because Of The Boys"), met the singer and gold digger who became Sally Bowles in the novel Goodbye to Berlin
and
Cabaret, and other characters whose fortunes had turned with the Nazis came to power. Accompanied by his sidekick the poet Wystan Hugh Auden, Isherwood frequented the bars in Berlin and fell in love with the young Heinz. The Cosy Corner

Casino to Kleiststrasse (the oldest gay bar in Europe, say) which has reopened after the war (I spent an evening in 1966 at the end of a long travel). In 2002, Kleist

L hen the German situation becomes untenable, Auden and Isherwood fled. In 1938, they go to China and jointly publish
Journal War in China. Emigrated to the United States during the war, Isherwood, aged 48, will meet with Don Bachardy, 18, on the beach in Santa Monica. They remain a couple until the death of the writer.
